5. I have further enquired into the cost of

living of an unmarried Chinese Constable, and of a married

man with a wife and two children. I estimate the cost of

living of an unmarried Constable at from $4.50 to $5 a

month (his messing in barracks alone costs him $3.20 a

month), and that of a married Constable with wife and two

children at $12,20 made up as follows:-
